How to Use the Sword and Character Name Generator
If you are wondering how to use a sword name generator, the steps below take about a minute. You pick a few options, press a button and get a list of names you can copy, save or use as a starting point for your own ideas.
Choose your generation mode
Use the Mode menu to decide what you want. Sword + Character is the default and gives a matching pair. You can also pick Sword Names Only, Character Names Only, Fantasy Warrior, Swordsman, Sword Master, Samurai, Sword Style, Sword Technique, Sword Attack, Legendary Weapon or Random. Warrior, Swordsman, Sword Master and Samurai modes create characters only and set the character class for you.
Select your language
Pick one of the 12 languages (English plus eleven others). In English, names are fictional constructions from word lists. In other languages, sword, technique, attack and style names pair two real words of that language, and character names combine common given and family names. A romanized version appears next to native script where it applies, and the name note gives the English meaning of any paired words. Lore text and notes stay in English.
Customize your preferences
Element shapes names in every language, and gender shapes character names. Sword type sets the blade illustration and, in English, the word endings. Theme and naming style shape English sword names only (themes without their own word list use a general fantasy list), and theme also lightly affects English technique, attack and style names. Class sets a matching sword type when “Any Sword” is selected, while personality and role shape the lore, and personality also adds a “Known as” title to English characters. Settings that do not fit your mode simply have no effect, and “Any Sword” and “Any Element” let the tool choose.
Choose the number of names
Use the Results menu to generate 5, 10, 15 or 20 names at once.
Click Generate
The generator combines its word lists using your settings and shows new results. Generate More adds extra names below the current ones, and Surprise Me randomizes the menus and generates a new batch right away. Your browser keeps a list of names already shown (up to about 2,000), and exact repeats are skipped. The tool first tries to avoid names that sound similar to earlier ones, but when a setting runs low on combinations it may show a few and tell you how many. If it finds no new names, it shows a message instead.
Explore name meanings
Each result card has a short note explaining how the name was built, plus a brief lore line. For fictional names these are creative explanations, not real etymology or historical facts. Where a name pairs real words, the note shows what the words mean in English. Character names are made from common given and family names and are not given a meaning.
Find similar names
Press Similar on a card to get one new result that keeps that card’s language, mode, element, sword type and class, along with the other settings used when the card was created. It appears below the original (or at the top of Results if you used it from Favorites), does not change your menus, and is saved to History as its own batch.
Save favorite names
Tap the heart to save a result, then open the Favorites tab to see it later. Tap it again to remove it. Saved favorites will not be generated again as new results. Favorites are stored in your own browser on this device, so they may not be kept if your browser blocks storage, you clear site data or you use private browsing.
Copy or download results
Copy a sword name, a character name, a full pair or the details of one result, or use Copy All for everything in the Results or Favorites list you are viewing. Results with a sword illustration also have Download card, which saves a PNG. The picture is an SVG illustration, not an AI-generated image, and the PNG uses system fonts, so non-Latin scripts depend on the fonts installed on your device.
Reset and generate again
Change any menu and press Generate again. Clear Results empties the list but keeps your favorites, history and the list of shown names. Reset names clears that list so previously shown names can appear again, except names you saved as favorites; it does not delete favorites or history. The History tab keeps your last 10 batches (each Generate, Generate More, Surprise Me or Similar action is one batch), and Restore replaces the current Results with that batch.
Treat the results as inspiration. Names are made in your browser and are not checked for availability, trademarks or uniqueness elsewhere on the internet, so search for a name before you use it in a published game, book or product. Fictional names are not claims of historical or traditional authenticity.
What Is a Sword Name Generator?
A sword name generator combines curated word lists, such as element words and sword endings, into names for swords and their wielders, rather than showing one fixed list of finished names. The pool of combinations is large but finite, so names can repeat or sound alike over time, which is why this tool keeps track of what it has already shown in your browser.
In the default mode it also creates a matching character, so the blade and its wielder share the same element and story. Each result comes with a short note on how the name was built and a line of lore, which makes it useful for writers, game masters, tabletop players and anyone building a fantasy world who needs a strong name quickly.
Fantasy Sword Name Generator
Fantasy mode blends element words such as Ember, Rime or Gloam with sword endings like fang, brand and song, so names read as coherent compounds.
In English, the sword type you pick changes the endings, and the naming style changes the shape: Short and Powerful names are one compound word, Elegant names split into two words, Dark and Epic styles add “The”, and Long Legendary names add a title such as Herald of the Last Dawn. Try different elements with the same sword type to see how much variety a single setting can produce.
Minecraft Inspired Sword Names
Choose the Minecraft Inspired theme to mix material-style words such as Cobalt, Amber, Obsidian and Emerald into some of your English sword names. These are original names inspired by the genre, not official item names, and NameZel is not affiliated with Minecraft. They work well as names for custom swords in map projects, server lore, role-play characters or any blocky adventure where you want a weapon with a story behind it.
Japanese Sword Name Generator
For Japanese-style English names, pick the Japanese Inspired name style (every sword name uses it) or the Japanese Inspired theme (about half of them), and use the Katana type for a matching illustration. These names pair real Japanese words such as kage (shadow), tsuki (moon) and hoshi (star) with invented endings like maru or kiri, and the note shows each word’s meaning.
Samurai mode creates Japanese-style character names in romanized form, and choosing Japanese as the language shows native script with romanization. All combinations are fictional constructions, not historical sword or person names, so ask a Japanese speaker to review a name if accuracy matters to you.
D&D Inspired Sword Names
Pick the D&D Inspired theme with a class such as Paladin, Rogue or Mage to get tabletop-friendly English sword names that sometimes use words like Rune, Delve and Pact. They suit one-shots, long campaigns or any classic fantasy setting.
The personality menu adds a Known as title to English character names and the role menu shapes the lore, which helps when you need a quick NPC with a signature weapon. These names are original and genre-inspired, and NameZel is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
Legendary and Magical Sword Names
Combine the Legendary or Magical sword type with an element such as Arcane, Light or Storm for English names that sound like relics with a long history. For something beyond swords, Legendary Weapon mode generates names for spears, warhammers, longbows, battle axes, scepters and halberds. Each result includes a short lore line you can use as a story hook, and Generate More lets you keep rolling until one feels right.
Dark and Cursed Sword Names
Use the Cursed sword type, the Dark Fantasy theme and an element such as Shadow, Blood or Void for English names with an ominous tone. Words like Wail, Grief, Hex and Blight come from the cursed and dark themes, while the character’s personality and role, such as Ruthless or Antihero, shape the lore.
Cursed swords are drawn with dark notches on the blade in the illustration, which makes them easy to spot among your results. If you also need a full antagonist to wield the blade, try the villain name generator.
Sword Names Inspired by Valyrian Steel
For ancient, dragon-themed styles, pick the Dragon element together with the Ancient sword type or the Ancient theme, which brings in words like Wyrm, Drake and Elder. The Dragon Slayer sword type adds more of that feel, and the Dragonborn class suggests heavier blades such as the Greatsword or Claymore.
Valyrian steel is a term from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. The results here are original names inspired by the genre, not official names from that or any franchise, and NameZel is not affiliated with them. To name a character to match, see the Dragonborn name generator.
Swordsman and Sword Master Name Generator
Fantasy Warrior, Swordsman, Sword Master and Samurai modes generate character names only, so you get a clean list without weapons. Swordsman and Sword Master set the class for you, Sword Master adds the title Master to English names, and Samurai uses Japanese-style romanized names in English or names from the selected language in other languages. Gender, personality and role still apply, and each name comes with a short backstory line, which helps with duelists, teachers, rivals and wandering fighters in a story or game.
Sword Techniques and Attack Name Generator
In English, Sword Technique, Sword Attack and Sword Style modes create move names built from your chosen element (sometimes with a word from your theme) and a movement word such as crescent cut, rising strike or mirror step. Styles read like school names or ways, for example a Style of the Hollow Moon, and some styles use a fixed phrase like that instead of your element.
In other languages these modes pair two real words rather than describe a move. Because these results are names rather than weapons, they do not show sword illustrations, but each one has a short line of lore describing how it might be used in a duel.
How to Choose a Memorable Sword Name
Short names with one clear image are the easiest to remember, so try Short and Powerful or Simple and Memorable first. Say the name out loud and make sure the tone matches the wielder, since a gentle healer and a ruthless villain should not carry the same kind of weapon name.
Avoid names already tied to famous characters, and use the heart button to keep a shortlist so you can compare finalists. Before using a name in a published game, book or product, search for it yourself to see if it is already taken. Sword Name Generator FAQs
Quick answers about how the generator works, what the results mean, and what to check before you use a name in your own project.
How does a sword name generator work?
It combines word pools for elements, themes and sword types using composition rules, then skips names it has already shown in your browser and tries to avoid ones that sound similar.
Can I generate a sword and character name together?
Yes. Sword + Character is the default mode and pairs both names around one element and story.
Can I choose a language?
Yes, twelve languages. In languages other than English, sword names pair two real words, with a romanization where the script needs one and the English meaning of the words in the name note. Character names combine common given and family names. They are stylized fictional names, not traditional ones, and the lore text stays in English.
Can I generate Japanese-inspired and cursed names?
Yes. Use the Japanese Inspired style or theme for Japanese-style English names, or the Cursed type together with the theme and element controls.
Can I use these names in my game or story?
Names are generated from simple word combinations, so a name shown here may already exist elsewhere. Check any name against existing trademarks or titles before commercial use.
Can I generate sword images?
The tool draws original SVG sword illustrations based on type and element. These are visual concepts, not AI-generated images. You can download each one as a PNG card, which uses system fonts for the text.
Is the generator free, and can I save favorites?
Yes, it is free. Favorites, history and the list of names already shown are stored in your own browser on this device. This tool does not send them to a server, and they may be lost if you clear site data or your browser blocks storage.
Can I generate sword techniques and attack names?
Yes, use the Sword Technique, Sword Attack or Sword Style modes. They describe moves in English and pair two real words in other languages.
Need a Different Kind of Name?
Beyond this Sword Name Generator, Namezel also generates business, brand, gaming, and pet names.
